April Atwater-Woods
Software Engineering, Director
Describe your career path.
Prior to supporting The Comptroller and Global Financial Services (CGFS), I held various IT positions while serving in the United States Air Force for eight years. I led a Helpdesk Support Team supporting over 400 personnel, served as a SharePoint Instructor for NATO, and worked as an IT Liaison for the Air Force Academy. I gained a wide range of skills and knowledge during my military service while earning several IT certifications along the way.
I joined CGFS in 2014, providing 24-hour technical support for financial systems within the Global Systems Operations department. During my time with CGFS, I earned my MBA with a concentration in Project Management. I’m currently a Software Engineer and Director, and I love being able to assist customers using the technical knowledge I’ve gained, as well as supporting my team in achieving their professional goals.
In terms of career growth, what is one piece of advice you would offer someone beginning a career at MIL?
One piece of advice I would offer is to take advantage of all the programs and training tools MIL provides. Technology is always evolving, and MIL offers various resources that allow you to continue learning. Also, recognize that people are valuable resources too—ask questions and learn from others around you. MIL has a great mentorship program that connects people for this very purpose.
What is one project from the past year that you are most proud of and why?
We recently transitioned from Windows to Linux, which required many long nights and weekends. We pushed through several difficult months, all with very little prior experience with Linux. Our system is now stable, and we’re beginning to see the benefits. I’m proud of my team for staying positive and trusting the process.
What do you love about your current position and/or overall career at MIL?
I’ve worked on several DoS contracts, and MIL has far exceeded my expectations. MIL’s leadership truly cares about you as a person and supports your professional growth. I value the opportunity and position I have at MIL. I love helping others with their administrative needs and being a facilitator in helping colleagues achieve their professional goal
