Years with MIL: 2
What were you doing before joining MIL?
Before joining MIL, I was a systems administrator and network engineer. I secured and maintained high availability and high performance computer clusters, primarily used for warfare analysis simulation computations. These systems were highly complex, incorporating over 1000 processing cores, terabytes of storage, and complex networking configurations.
Why did you decide to join MIL?
I joined MIL because of the opportunity to pursue a technically challenging and personally satisfying career opportunity. MIL had just established its Cyber Services Team and I was the third employee to join the new section. The chance to be part of company that was actively expanding its services was something I valued greatly.
What are you working on now?
Currently at MIL, I am a member of a team of cyber security professionals that stay on the cutting edge of cyber advancements. Often called a Red Team, our group has a diverse set of skills that we apply to customers across the country. My work on the team ranges from computer vulnerabilities research and exploitation to physical security inspections.
What is important about your work?
The work that I do as part of the MIL’s Cyber Team is very important across the country. The term cyber is certainly a buzzword, but shouldn’t be so quickly dismissed. Computer technologies are integrated in our daily lives— from cars, planes, toasters, and even lightbulbs! Social media dominates the internet and computer technologies have advanced so rapidly that often security is overlooked or ignored. Unfortunately that means that sometimes people think they’re safe when they really aren’t, and the work I am a part of here focuses on highlighting these weaknesses and making sure they get fixed.
What are the best aspects about your current job?
There are so many things I enjoy about my job at MIL that it is difficult to explain them all. The opportunity to travel around the country, the diverse and skilled team of people I work with daily, the unique training opportunities, and perhaps most rare, a job that I can feel that I’m making a difference by doing.
Why do you enjoy working at MIL?
The people I work with at MIL are some of the best people I’ve ever worked with. The job is challenging and the work is rewarding. My team really makes a difference in turning work into a place I enjoy coming to daily.
