St. Mary’s Ryken High School Football Field Named after MIL President and Managing Partner
Alumnus Maurice I. "Butch" Long, Jr. honored with football field dedication last month
BOWIE, Md.—November 08, 2011--On October 7, 2011, St. Mary’s Ryken High School (SMR) held a dedication ceremony to name its football field after alumnus, Maurice I. "Butch" Long, Jr. The field is now named the "MIL Family Field."
Long is a 1966 graduate and has since been a dedicated supporter of SMR. During his time as a student, he played varsity baseball, basketball and ran cross country.
"I have always been a proud student and alumnus of St. Mary’s Ryken and I am thrilled to still be a part of their community after all this time," said Long. "It’s been a great pleasure to serve on the school board and to see my daughters attend and grow at my alma mater. SMR is a wonderful school and I look forward to seeing it flourish in the years to come."
After graduating from SMR, Long went on to college, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in Management and Computer Systems from The American University. Long later co-founded his own government contracting company, The MIL Corporation (MIL), where he currently serves as President. MIL is now in its 31st year of business.
Upon returning to his native Southern Maryland after 20 years of residing in the Washington Metropolitan area, Long re-engaged with his alma mater. First as a parent sending each of his three daughters to SMR, second as an SMR Board member and finally as SMR’s first lay board chair. In total, Long served 13 years on the SMR Board, the last five as the board chair.
During his tenure on the board, SMR rose from an enrollment of 420 students to nearly 700 students, a renovation program was initiated and completed for existing facilities, and a new Fine Arts Center was built and serves as a cornerstone of the rejuvenated SMR campus.
The dedication took place on Homecoming Weekend at SMR, located in Leonardtown, Md. SMR is a private, coeducational, Catholic secondary school sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers. To learn more, visit their Web site at
