Department of State Food Drive
The Washington, DC – Office of Global Financial Systems Support (GFSS) supported the State Department (DoS) annual Food Drive by collecting food items in conjunction with its Christmas party. Federal and MIL employees and their families gave non-perishable and hygiene items during the weeks leading up the Christmas feast. Items collected included pasta, canned vegetables, tuna, toothpaste, and deodorant to name a few. One staff member used the occasion to teach young family members a lesson about sharing and caring for others during the holidays. She gave an exceptionally large donation in the name of her 4 nieces and nephews. The goal of DoS was to collect 10,000 pounds of food and hygiene items to be donated to the Capital Area Food Bank. GFSS made a stellar showing by collecting 159 pounds of the total 7,000 pounds collected. The donation was well received as charitable contributions were substantially down for the year. Job well done GFSS and thank you!
2007 Christmas Adopt-a-Family
This year, The MIL Corporation volunteered to adopt five families, totaling 17 individuals, from the ARC of Southern Maryland for Christmas. The ARC is an organization promoting community involvement, independence and personal success for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Thanks to the support and involvement of MIL team members, we were able to purchase items from each of the families "wish list" as well as gift cards for groceries for each family.
Special thanks to each of the MIL family coordinators for helping pull this effort together. Family coordinators were Sheila Goldsborough (Family 1), Larry Wise (Family 2), Marty Bailey (Family 3), Misty Lallande (Family 4) and Leah Romer (Family 5). We also want to thank everyone who assisted in donating money, purchasing presents, wrapping, labeling, packaging and delivering a great deal of gifts.
St. Mary’s County Festival of Trees
The MIL Corporation participated in the Tenth Annual St. Mary’s County Festival of Trees. The MIL tree was a true representation of St. Mary’s County and its waterways as it was decorated in an oyster theme. Here’s how it works: participants submit fully decorated Christmas trees and wreaths; visitors cast votes for their favorite tree/wreath; and on the last day a silent auction takes place. This event was sponsored by the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary and the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad and other participating emergency service departments benefits.
Southern Maryland Applied Research and Technology Consortium, Inc.
The MIL Corporation donated several computers to SMARTCO, Inc. SMARTCO utilizes all donations to support their "Computers to Schools" initiative. All equipment is refurbished and then transferred to a school or eligible non-profit organization in the Southern Maryland area. If the equipment is not able to be refurbished, it is 100% recycled. This is a great organization to support and an easy way to get rid of any unwanted computer equipment.
Annual Three Oaks Coat Drive
MIL Employees came through in support of our Annual Three Oaks Coat Drive. The Three Oaks Center provides support to those in need of shelter. They help individuals and families meet their basic needs for food and shelter, provide guidance, counseling and self-improvement resources. The MIL Corporation began collecting coats a few years ago and this has become one of our annual volunteer programs. Our coordinators this year were Sue Abell and Judy Cusic and we collected a combination of coats and jackets of all sizes, including hats, gloves and mittens. This support shows a true commitment of our employees to their surrounding community.
