Situation: The Navy was looking to increase the security posture of its Research, Design, Test and Evaluation network. The perimeter security as well as the individual security of each system on the network would need to be reviewed and have recommendations made. Risk assessments would need to be carried out across the entire network to ensure compliance with stringent mandates.Action: MIL evaluated the market leaders in Intrusion Prevention, Intrusion Detection, Security Information and Event Management, and Host-Based Security Systems. The team chose the best of each category based on multiple factors given to them by the customer. Vulnerability scans were performed on all systems and any vulnerabilities were addressed.
Result: MIL continues to implement the chosen applications and hardware to improve the overall security posture and meet the rigorous mandates put forth by the agencies that oversee security for the Department of Defense. Team members now perform reoccurring scans of devices on the network; have automated Security and Event information alerts notify them of intrusion attempts, and “defense in-depth” security processes online for the customer.
